Happy New Year from the Chairman!
Happy New Year from the Savannah Area Young Republicans!
2014 was a successful year for both our party and this chapter. As a party, we maintained control of the U.S. House and took control of the U.S. Senate. In the State of Georgia, both our state legislature and our Governor’s mansion remain in capable, Republican hands. As a chapter, we continued holding “Meet Your Reps” and “Meet Your Candidates” events. These programs served to increase access to both elected officials and Republican candidates. They will continue during my tenure. This year, we also had the pleasure of hosting the Georgia Young Republican State Convention here in the Hostess City!
As Chairman, I have set two priorities for 2015. The first priority is a focus on issues. While we will not be endorsing candidates in the upcoming municipal elections, we will be addressing related issues. Since the beginning of the 21st Century, the Savannah area has experienced substantial growth. This growth has brought in new people who enhance our community with fresh ideas and the potential for new leadership. However, these people and ideas are often overpowered by the protectionism this has a stronghold on this community. It is this strong sense of territorialism that pushes out new leadership and utilizes government red tape to keep new ways of doing business out of our local marketplace. As Young Republicans, we believe that a protectionist and territorial mindset will only cripple Savannah. However, we also believe that a mindset that embraces fresh ideas and new leadership will enable Savannah to live up to her potential!
Our second priority is a focus on service. It’s been said that “people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” This year, many of our social functions will double as fundraisers for local charities and non-profits. As crime is an issue on the minds of many Savannahians, the Savannah Area Young Republicans have already begun work on a fundraiser to benefit Crime Stoppers of Savannah-Chatham County. Additionally, before this year is over, you’ll see pictures of Young Republicans serving the community in a variety of ways!
If you are a like-minded, young adult who wants to be a part of something that is bigger than yourself; then I hope to see you at our next event!
